The Hillside Garden - Pathways
The Hillside Garden spans the largest gradient on the site and provides spectacular views of the whole complex.
The invitation to walk freely in the Hillside Garden is based throughout the project on the possible choices of paths to follow. Which might depend on the amount of light, time available or current season. Whatever the occasion. a rhythm is created with time giving a continuously changing aspect to the garden.
There are functional and formal routes but also more random, inessential paths which provide the visitor with larger scale experiences and more intimate ones through navigating the secondary pathways.
The pace identifies passage of movement, even when the paths themselves have been hidden by tall vegetation, suggesting the importance of paths as breathing spaces for the garden.
There is no single way to explore the many areas of the site and see it all in one pass. You have to select a path and start walking and as you come to another you then decide which way looks most interesting to you. The garden encourages exploration and attention to detail, putting you in a relationship with the garden that is uniquely yours.
